Age: 16
Canon: 15: Meisetsu Kougyou Koukou Rugby Bu
Canon Point: Midway through Chapter 13
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Orientation: n/a
History:
Arika's parents died when he was still too young to remember them. It's not mentioned how they died but because of their youth it's assumed it was an accident. He was raised by his grandmother in a rural and old fashioned village on the island of Ajishima where he was the one and only child. There probably wasn't another soul on the island under the age of 50 aside from himself and maybe the occasional visitor. He was the only one in the school, and several of the townspeople took turns teaching him different subjects.
He gained an interest and soon obsession with rugby after his grandmother got out some old tapes of his father's high school games. Before long he wanted to play rugby himself more then anything else. He was saving up for a ball of his own to practice with, when, like a miracle, an old beat up rugby ball washed up on the shore after a big storm. From there on out he practiced his kicking day in and day out. Practically all his free time was dedicated to practice (as there were no computers on the island and the TVs only got a couple channels, there wasn't much for entertainment).
Since practice was all he did he got REALLY good at the things he could do by himself. Namely his ridiculous kicking skill, above average speed, and crazy footwork.
His real dream though was playing rugby on a team and making friends. As soon as he was old enough to enter high school he moves away from the island and goes to live with his aunt so he can attend Meisetsu Industrial High School. There he joins the rugby club and starts playing in games and helping his team mates get stronger.
On the team he plays the position of fullback.
Appearance:
He's a little on the short side though he's not super tiny. He's just 'hasn't quite gotten a good growth spurt' short. He's an athlete too so while he doesn't look like much he's physically very fit. His most distinctive feature is his bright red hair that is probably overdue for a trim and usually sticks out from under his helmet. When not in his school or rugby uniform his dress is casual and typical of a teenager; jeans and tshirts or polo shirts.
Personality:
Akira has two goals in life. One is to play rugby and the other is to have one hundred friends. Both of these goals he's pretty vocal about and most people find out about it. He is a happy and cheerful kid to unreal levels. There's barely anything that can get him down. He is somewhat of an awkward duck around kids his own age because he never really had any friends growing up so he doesn't really know HOW to act. Not that he really realizes HOW awkward he can be. His over the top cheer and near immediate requests of friendship can often be a cause of second hand embarrassment for those who don't know him very well.
Because friendship is a very Big Deal to him. He didn't have any growing up, so now that he's in a position to make them he wants all the friends and all the fun friendy times one can possibly have. The first time he greets people he usually asks to be their friend (AND MAYBE SOMEDAY IF THEY DON'T MIND THEIR BEST FRIEND). He tends to get a little depressed if his request is rejected or ignored, though this lasts a minute or two at the most. He also occasionally requests confirmation that yes they are still friends, or if he his first request for friendship was not met with a 'yes' he'll ask every once in a while if they're friends yet.
He does have ONE friend of his own before he enters highschool, though it's not what one might expect. His 'friend' is the beat up rugby ball he found on the beach years ago. He claims that his friendship with the ball why he's so good kicking it. Because it's his friend he can lift it up higher and he always knows where it'll fly and how much it'll spin and how it will bounce when it hits the ground. He almost always carries it around with him, usually in a bag when he's not using it. But when he's going out somewhere it goes with him, even during class. When he was little he took it with him the bath and even slept with it like a teddy bear.
While Akira is arguably the most skilled person in the series he's hardly arrogant. He knows he's good, yes. But he knows he's good because he practiced HARD for years to get the skills he has. And he is more then happy to do everything he can to help a team mate learn how to kick and move like he can. He does like to show off his abilities, but for him it's more of a sharing thing then wanting attention. He loves rugby, he shows his kicks off to other people who like rugby, maybe they'll think he's cool and they'll be friends! See everything comes back to friendship for him.
His interest in rugby comes from a few things. One stemming from his parents dying when he was still a baby. He never got to know his parents, so seeing those old video tapes of his father playing the game were really meaningful to him. Learning how to play it is like bonding with the father he'll never get to meet. He was also amazed seeing so many people on one team working towards a common goal. It was unlike anything he had ever seen before and he wanted more then anything to experience that for himself.
Because of his upbringing he's not really used to large crowds, especially if he's the focus of attention can make him very flustered. He gets red in the face and starts stuttering. The same is true for big cities. Sometimes his nerves in these situations get so bad he'll work himself up enough to get physically ill. Thankfully this doesn't extend to paying in games. He's too focused to really care who's watching.
While he can be a little bit of a ditz he takes his games very seriously. He gives his all, and he expects his teammates to give their all as well. It doesn't really seem to matter if it's a win or a loss, so long as everyone's playing to the best of their ability and doesn't give up even if things look hopeless. Because people just giving up is really one of the only things that can actually make Akira angry. Of course the next day he'll feel awful and guilty and apologize profusely over loosing his temper.
Abilities:
Akira has phenomenal rugby abilities. There's a reason he's called a magician by his team mates and a monster by opposing teams. His skill in kicking is generally agreed to to be far and above anything found in highschool clubs, and is already on par with professional players. He can kick up to fifty meters with near pinpoint accuracy , sixty meters seems to be his limit for getting a drop goal, though the implication is he can probably kick even FARTHER he just might not be scoring any points. He can also control the speed of the ball's rotation, the angle it flies, and even accurately predict how it will bounce when it hits the ground. He claims he can do all this because he's friends with the ball.
While Akira isn't his team's fastest player, he's really speedy himself. He can cover fifty meters in about six seconds. The way he runs is considered a little odd too. He starts off somewhat slow but he continually picks up speed the longer he runs. This makes it a little difficult for opposing players to tackle him when he really starts taking off because his speed is hard to judge. Coupled with this is his amazing footwork. He's agile enough to make it past the entire defensive lineup of one of the top tier schools to score a try all on his own.
Because he doesn't have much experience on a team he can't pass or tackle with much skill and he can't take a tackle very well if he can't avoid it. This is the main reason he plays fullback which is typically the rear most position in rugby. Way in the back he's relatively safe from interference so he can focus on his kicks without fear of opposing players interrupting him or getting in the way.
Other:
The only type of TV shows he watches are Jidaigeki, which are period dramas based on Japanese history.

First Person:
[ If the mop of messy red hair and big silly smile are the slightest bit familiar, you might get the feeling that you're about to hear something ridiculous come out of his mouth. ]
Please be my friend!
[ His excitement doesn't seem to be dampened even the slightest by the fact that this is being broadcast to the entire network. ]
I've been kind of sad since I lost my first friends ever when I came here so soon after I made them... but I've been thinking! There are lots of people around here. Which means lots of potential friends! I'd really love to be friends with each and every person around here. My goal is one hundred friends but having more then that would be even better.
[ He pauses for a moment to take a breath because he had been speaking rapidfire. ]
We could have a lot of fun! We could play rugby or watch TV or... uh... play checkers! And things! All sorts of things! I've always wanted friends to do things with.
Third Person:
Today marked a big day for Akira. It was his first time going shopping in a big grocery store. There wasn't anything like this on the island he grew up on, and when he moved for highschool the aunt he was boarding with usually did all the shopping. He was excited, he was nervous, he was SO ready for this grocery store adventure.
Inside he was gawking. He'd never seen so much food all in one place before! There was stuff everywhere! It was one of the most amazing things he'd ever seen. Eventually though he had his basket filled and he made his way to the checkout line. It was there that he began to have a problem.
The line was long and disorganized and people kept bumping into him and one person even YELLED at him and told him he was in the way! Akira was beginning to feel a little overwhelmed, he was dizzy and lightheaded. He wasn't used to this kind of thing! There were too many people around. He really didn't like this one bit.
"Ugh..." he groaned, legs feeling shaky as he instinctively grabbed the shirt of the person standing in front of him to try and regain some balance, "Think I'm gonna pass out..."
